1. She’s best known for her signature “girls.”
Stout’s expressive works are most often all about the girls—joyously naked, colorfully hued, and playfully posed female figures. Stout describes the representations as “sexually open, but not sexual,” and often touches on domestic themes and the objectification of women in her work.

2. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012 with a degree in Furniture Design.
While her work extends way beyond what most consider “furniture,” Stout’s work—no matter how fantastical, amorphous, or comically anatomical—always relates back to function and how an object will be used. That means female figures often take shape as slouchy couches, benches, lamps, and rough-hewn mirror stands.

3. She’s obsessed with texture.
With a very hands-on approach, Stout gravitates towards tactile mediums: clay, papier-mâché, fabric, resin, scraps. Her 2015 debut solo show at Nina Johnson gallery, “Docile/Domicile/Dandy,” included ceramics, textiles, murals, and carpentry. Due in part to its great success, Stout later landed a spot on Forbes’ “30 Under 30 in Art and Style.”

Stout’s collaboration with Forty Five Ten represents what she does best, combining her conversation on femininity and everyday design in a new medium for her: ready-to-wear. The exclusive collaboration features ten styles designed by the artist. “I was inspired to make a short run line of completely comfortable and wearable clothes inspired by the ease, delight and slight discomfort of picnics,” says Stout. “Many of the pieces have rocks sewn on or into them, like a pebble in your shoe. The silhouettes are meant to be wide and comfortable, but are either sheer or have holes to introduce a sense of vulnerability.”

The limited-edition collab launched in our New York store, displayed on a sculptural fixture designed by the artist herself. Alongside the ready-to-wear, Stout has created two exclusive, plaid clutches and three one-of-a-kind vases. Adorned with hearts and chains, the ceramic fine art pieces (all 2019) are among her most recent works to date. “I was so excited to partner with Katie on this project,” says President and Chief Creative Officer, Kristen Cole. “My husband and I have collected her work. We have a ‘shady lady’ lamp that I adore. Her Miami gallery, Nina Johnson, is near our Miami store and helped facilitate our collaboration.”
