Martha Sturdy’s evolution as an artist over the past three decades has led her to a place of prominence in the world of design. Famous for her oversized statements in resin, steel, brass, and aluminum, Sturdy takes “elemental shapes found in nature and combines them with global influences” and reveals she creates pieces which are “dramatic yet minimal, sexy yet strong, aggressive yet soft.” In 1990, Sturdy launched a collection of innovative resin tabletops and home accessories. Her pieces gradually grew in size and scope, with massive brass dining tables, seven foot steel plates, and sculptural club chairs. Her most recent work involves using steel as a canvas and resin and acid washes as paints, creating metal pieces with surfaces that evolve over time to reflect the personality of its owner. Sturdy hand crafts and finishes all of her pieces in her studio in British Columbia.
